The
university’s motto
and seal were
conceived by
students, who as
early as 1936
captured its
“entrepreneurial and
cultural spirit.” It
was in the
journalism class
launched by
Winnifred Shannon
that a freshman
student, Elizabeth
Kuenzler Marshall,
designed the motto
and seal – the
Phoenician trireme–
for the American
Junior College for
Women. The motto “To
strive, to seek, to
find, and not to
yield,” was chosen
from Alfred Lord
Tennyson’s poem “Ulysses.”
