Did
You Know?
Women’s
education at AJCW
and then BCW had a
ripple effect in the
Arab world. The
college’s alumnae
went on to
contribute to
positive change in
education and
community affairs,
assuming leadership
and ministerial
roles in their
countries. In her
book Pioneering
Profiles: Beirut
College for Women,
Registrar and
Director of
Admissions Marie
Sabri (’41) wrote
that the graduates
embodied the impact
of the college “as a
center from which
cultural influence
has spread through
the lives of its
alumnae to the Arab
and Western Worlds.”
Dr. Sabri traveled
annually around the
Middle East to
reconnect with the
alumnae
and meet with
heads of state to
promote women’s
education. In
between obtaining an
MA in Education from
Columbia University
in 1955, and later a
PhD from the same
university on a
scholarship in 1964,
she spent five years
working at BCW. She
served as interim
president from 1967
to 1969 and
dedicated the rest
of her career to the
university.
