Did You Know?
Some
of the features LAUers enjoy today as a given—shared governance,
coeducation, a modern liberal arts core—were set in motion in the
early 1970s as part of a set of innovative reforms spearheaded by
President William S. Schechter. He established a student council,
court, and parliament, and an Executive Council representing all
campus stakeholders. “All college personnel, including students and
staff seemed ready and more than willing to experience grassroots
democracy for the first time in their lives and the first time in the
life of the institution, I gathered,” Dr. Schechter recalled many
years later. He is also remembered for leading BCW’s transformation
into the coeducational BUC, endorsing the creation of a women’s
institute, strengthening the liberal arts program, and instituting the
college’s first systematic fundraising program, among many other
changes.
