Did You Know?
Frances
Pryor Irwin was 29 when she became the founding president of the
American Junior College for Women in 1924. Thanks to her vision and
diligence, the college succeeded in its first decade despite a
difficult socioeconomic context. She advocated for funding to
establish a campus, saw to the purchase of an adequate plot of land,
and oversaw the design and construction of its first building, Sage
Hall. The brand new “college on the hill” soon drew students from all
over the region. Irwin died at the age of 44 while
pursuing a PhD in the US, shattering her colleagues’ hopes that she
would return to lead the college again. In 1950, the newly built
Irwin Hall was named in honor of her enduring legacy.
